"What's going on today?"
I have a kid that has a rigid view of life. We're working on getting him more flexible, but to help him understand what the plan was for each day I wrote an app that would display the daily schedule and what item we were currently on.
The app ran on a Raspberry Pi and connected to our TV over HDMI. I wrote a program that would sync a dropbox folder to the Raspberry Pi (there wasn't a native app). My wife would put together the schedule she wanted the next day as a text document in the schedule folder. She could even do it on her iPad and because it was connected to Dropbox and it would make it to the Pi. She could also associate art (even layers of art) with a given event in the schedule. She actually made some art specific for our kids and this app. I also connected a bluetooth app on my wife's phone that would let her skip events throughout the day.
The app was pretty successful at helping my kid make peace with the schedule. Knowing how long something would go and what would be coming next really helped him accept what we were currently doing and he even became a helpful assistant in helping us get through what we'd planned.
